Chapter 7 - The Wedding That Continued Without Her

The wedding did not continue immediately.
How could it?
Amelia sat in a private room behind the chapel while Nora gently helped her clean her face.
Ethan stayed with her, still holding her hand.
No one spoke for several minutes.
Then Amelia said, “I don’t want to wear it.”
Nora paused with the wig in her hands.
“Are you sure?”
Amelia looked at herself in the mirror.
Bald.
Pale.
Eyes swollen.
Mascara smudged.
Bride.
Still bride.
“Yes.”
Ethan’s eyes filled.
“You don’t have to prove anything.”
“I know.”
“Then why?”
Amelia touched her bare scalp.
“Because I don’t want the last image of me today to be her taking something from me.”
Nora cried then.
Ethan did too.
Amelia almost laughed.
“I’m the one with cancer. Why are you two falling apart?”
Ethan kissed her hand.
“Because we love you.”
That sentence steadied her more than any makeup could.
Outside the room, the chapel changed.
Vivian was escorted to a side office by security after trying to call foundation staff and demanding that no one release statements.
Several board members followed her, not to support her, but to contain her.
Donors whispered in tight circles.
Some left.
Most stayed.
Not for scandal.
For Amelia.
The pastor knocked gently.
“Amelia, there is no pressure.”
She stood.
“I want to finish.”
He nodded.
“Then we finish.”
When the doors opened again, the chapel rose.
Not because a coordinator told them to.
Because every person in the room understood that standing mattered now.
Amelia walked down the aisle with no wig.
No veil.
No illusion that illness had not touched her.
Ethan waited at the altar, crying openly.
This time, nobody looked away.
The pastor’s voice trembled when he began again.
“Dearly beloved, we are gathered here not for perfection, but for covenant.”
Amelia squeezed Ethan’s hands.
When it was time for vows, Ethan did not read from his card.
He looked at Amelia and spoke from somewhere deeper.
“I do not love you because you are easy to celebrate. I love you because you are you when the room is kind and when it is cruel. I choose you in health, in sickness, in scandal, in quiet, in every version of the truth.”
Amelia’s tears fell freely.
Her voice shook when she answered.
“I choose you without hiding. Without pretending. Without letting fear decide who gets to stand beside me.”
The pastor pronounced them married.
The chapel erupted.
Not polite applause.
A release.
A defense.
A witness.
Ethan kissed her gently, his hands cradling her face like she was the strongest thing he had ever touched.
In the side office, Vivian heard the applause through the wall.

For the first time in her life, a room had chosen someone else over her.
👉 Amelia refused to let Vivian end the wedding, and walking back without the wig turned humiliation into the one thing Vivian could not control.
