Chapter 7 - THE NIGHT THE ACCOUNTS FROZE

Vincent was not arrested in the ballroom.

Not yet.

Federal agents needed to preserve evidence across dozens of locations before the DeLucas understood the scale of the operation.

But his accounts began freezing before the orchestra stopped playing.

Corporate cards failed.

Wire transfers were blocked.

A private plane scheduled for Savannah was grounded.

DeLuca Development’s server access was restricted under a sealed order.

Vincent tried to leave through the service corridor.

Hotel security stopped him long enough for agents to collect his phone under the warrant.

He called the action harassment.

He described Evelyn as a jealous wife suffering an emotional breakdown.

Three hundred witnesses had seen who lost control.

Savannah attempted a different strategy.

She entered a restroom and deleted messages.

The hotel network had already mirrored her phone data.

Salvatore remained calm.

“Do not speak to anyone,” he ordered the family.

Then he called three judges, two council members, and a police commissioner.

None returned his call.

The DeLucas had spent decades buying access.

That night, access became evidence.

Evelyn left through the kitchen with Nora.

The single pearl remained inside her hand.

Only when they reached the secure car did she begin shaking.

Nora removed her coat and wrapped it around Evelyn’s shoulders.

“You did it.”

“My mother’s necklace is gone.”

“The pearls are evidence. We’ll recover them.”

“It was the last thing she touched.”

Nora looked toward the ballroom.

“Rose may have planned for this exact moment.”

At the federal office, Agent Torres showed Evelyn photographs of the clasp.

The hidden key had survived.

Nora recognized the locker number.

Harbor Storage occupied an old maritime building in Brooklyn.

Rose had rented a unit there under a legal trust.

Nora was named as emergency custodian but had never received the key.

“Your mother did not want me opening it unless the necklace was broken,” she said.

“Why?”

“Because breaking it meant the DeLucas had stopped pretending.”

Before they could visit the locker, Evelyn was placed under protective security.

Vincent had sent one message before agents seized his phone.

Bring her home before she destroys everyone.

The recipient was his cousin Marco, head of DeLuca Security.

Marco claimed the message referred to a marital argument.

Investigators found two unregistered firearms in his vehicle and photographs of Evelyn entering Nora’s office.

Marco was detained.

The next morning, Vincent appeared on television.

He stood outside the DeLuca headquarters surrounded by attorneys.

“My wife has been manipulated by federal agents who want to destroy an Italian American family business.”

He never mentioned Savannah.

He never mentioned the forged contracts.

He held one recovered pearl between his fingers.

“This belonged to her mother. I hope Evelyn remembers who returned that necklace to her.”

Evelyn watched from Nora’s office.

Vincent was warning her.

He believed returning the pearls proved he had controlled Rose’s belongings after her death.

Agent Torres understood the threat too.

“He just admitted access to evidence from your mother’s final case.”

Vincent’s television statement was preserved.

Then the warrant team entered Harbor Storage.

Locker 317 contained no cash.

No weapons.

Only seven banker’s boxes, an old cassette recorder, and a sealed envelope addressed to Evelyn.

The first box held Rose’s original DeLuca audit.

The second contained photographs of Vincent meeting the driver responsible for her fatal hit-and-run.

👉 Rose had not hidden only financial records—she had documented the men following her before she died.
