Chapter 6 - THE AGREEMENT BESIDE THE MISTRESS

The gala began with champagne, cameras, and a string orchestra.

DeLuca Development executives stood beneath gold banners praising fifty years of “building New York.”

Politicians arrived through a private entrance.

Union leaders shook Salvatore’s hand.

Savannah wore a red gown chosen to ensure every photographer noticed her.

Evelyn entered beside Vincent wearing Rose’s pearls.

He leaned toward her without smiling.

“You sign before the speeches.”

“No.”

“You have not read the revised agreement.”

“I read enough.”

“This is not a request.”

Evelyn looked toward the ballroom cameras.

“Then choose your next move carefully.”

Vincent’s hand tightened at her waist.

He guided her toward a private table beside the stage.

The agreement waited beneath a silver pen.

Savannah stood beside it.

Her name appeared on the final page as director of the merged company’s charitable division.

Evelyn looked at Vincent.

“You placed your mistress inside the transfer.”

Savannah smiled.

“Careful. People will think you’re jealous.”

“I am not jealous of a woman being used to sign invoices.”

Savannah’s smile disappeared.

Vincent ordered Evelyn to sit.

She remained standing.

Family members gathered nearby.

Some knew a confrontation was coming.

Vincent’s uncle blocked the nearest exit.

Salvatore watched from the stage steps.

“Sign,” Vincent said.

“No.”

“You live in my home.”

“The penthouse is held by my mother’s trust.”

“You wear my name.”

“A name is not ownership.”

“You spend my money.”

“I traced your money.”

That sentence changed the room.

Savannah stepped forward.

“What did you trace?”

Evelyn looked at her.

“Enough to know Harbor Civic Solutions does not build community centers.”

Vincent seized the necklace.

“Take it off.”

He pulled.

Pearls exploded across the marble.

Gasps moved through the ballroom.

The public humiliation was supposed to make Evelyn cry.

Instead, she picked up one pearl.

“Don’t pick them up.”

Vincent saw the phone inside her clutch.

“You made it public,” she said.

Then she sent the evidence.

By the time the bank alerts reached Vincent, Nora and Agent Torres had already confirmed receipt.

The ballroom security team received instructions to preserve every camera feed and prevent anyone from removing company records.

Savannah stepped away from Vincent.

Too late.

The microphones near the stage had captured the demand to sign.

The cameras had recorded the necklace being torn away.

Three hundred guests had become witnesses.

Evelyn walked toward the exit.

Behind her, Vincent shouted, “You’re still my wife!”

She stopped without turning.

“Not after tonight.”

As she left, a hotel employee noticed the antique clasp beneath the stage curtain.

He placed it inside an evidence envelope with the scattered pearls.

The clasp felt unusually heavy.

When federal technicians examined it later, they discovered a hidden internal chamber.

Inside was a tiny brass key and a strip of paper no wider than a match.

The paper contained four words:
