Chapter 7 - Beatrice Breaks the Family Rule

The Hawthorne family had one rule.

Richard must never be embarrassed in public.

Everyone knew it.

Beatrice lived by it.

Preston was raised under it.

Naomi married into it without understanding how deeply it ran.

Richard could embarrass others.

Correct waiters.

Mock relatives.

Rewrite credit.

Humiliate employees.

Dismiss his wife.

Silence his son.

But no one embarrassed Richard.

Not at his table.

Not in his club.

Not in front of donors.

That night, Beatrice broke the rule.

After the program correction, Jonathan paused the gala and moved the major donors into a private boardroom.

Arthur insisted Naomi come with them.

Naomi nearly refused.

Her cheek still throbbed.

Her hands would not stop shaking.

But Arthur touched her shoulder gently.

“You do not have to fight alone.”

Inside the boardroom, Richard tried to regain control.

“This has become emotional theater,” he said. “Naomi has always struggled with boundaries around her mother’s death.”

Arthur’s face darkened.

Beatrice stood.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

She looked terrified.

Then she looked at Naomi.

“No, Richard. You don’t get to use Elena’s death as an explanation for your theft.”

Richard’s mouth tightened.

“Sit down.”

Beatrice did not.

Naomi stared at her mother-in-law.

For the first time, she saw not a weak woman, but a woman who had been afraid for so long fear had become posture.

Beatrice opened her purse and removed a folded printout.

“I have emails.”

Richard’s eyes changed.

“Beatrice.”

She handed them to Jonathan.

“They show Richard instructing Preston’s office to send altered copy to the printer after Naomi approved the final proof.”

Preston looked at his mother like she had stabbed him.

“Mom.”

Beatrice’s eyes filled.

“I watched your father make you into someone smaller than you were.”

Preston flinched.

“But you still chose to raise your hand.”

That broke him more than Arthur’s anger had.

Beatrice turned back to Naomi.

“I knew he was planning to minimize your credit. I did not know he removed it entirely until today. I should have called you. I was afraid.”

Naomi’s voice was raw.

“Of him?”

Beatrice looked at Richard.

“Yes.”

Silence filled the room.

Richard laughed once.

Cold.

“You are all being ridiculous.”

Jonathan laid the emails across the table.

“No, Richard. This is clear.”

The emails showed everything.

Richard calling Naomi’s credit “excessive.”

Richard saying the foundation name could remain “if legally unavoidable.”

Richard instructing Preston to tell the printer the final changes were “family-approved.”

Richard writing one sentence that made Arthur go still.

Once the room credits Hawthorne publicly, Vale will not pull funding without looking vindictive.

Arthur read it twice.

Then looked up.

“You were betting I would protect appearances.”

Richard’s smile returned faintly.

“Men in our position usually do.”

Arthur glanced at Naomi.

Then at Preston.

Then at the red mark still visible on his daughter’s cheek.

“I am not in your position.”

He turned to Jonathan.

“The foundation is suspending the next funding transfer until corrective action is approved by our board.”

Richard’s face drained.

That transfer was twenty million dollars.

Without it, the project stalled.

Without the project, the gala became a scandal.

Without the gala, Richard’s legacy collapsed into one viral clip of his son slapping the woman who built the whole thing.

Preston sat down heavily.

Naomi looked at the emails.

At the proof.

At the people finally saying what she had known alone for months.

For years, she had thought truth needed permission from powerful people.

Now she understood something else.

Truth had power too.

May you like

It had simply been waiting for witnesses.

👉 Beatrice’s emails proved Richard erased Naomi on purpose, and Arthur’s suspended funding turned the Hawthorne family’s public triumph into a legal crisis.
