For one terrifying second, no one moved.
Then the courtroom became chaos.

Evelyn knelt beside Madison, one arm around her shoulders.

“I’m not ready,” Madison cried.
Evelyn held her face.
“Yes, you are.”
“No. He’ll take the baby.”
“No, he won’t.”
Ethan pushed back from his table.
“I’m the father. I have rights.”
The court officer blocked him instantly.
The judge stood.
“Mr. Cross, you will not approach her.”
Ethan’s face twisted.
“She’s unstable. You all saw it.”
Madison moaned as another contraction hit.
Evelyn looked up at the judge.
“Your Honor, emergency protective custody for the child. Now.”
Ethan laughed in disbelief.
“You can’t take my baby.”
Carter Mills was already moving.
“Your Honor, based on the recordings entered into evidence, Mr. Cross has expressed intent to use custody as coercion. We request an emergency order preventing him from making medical or custodial decisions until a full hearing.”
Ethan shouted, “That recording is out of context.”
The judge looked at him with open disgust.
“Mr. Cross, the context was clear.”
Vanessa began crying quietly behind him.
An EMT team rushed in with a stretcher.
Madison panicked when they tried to move her.
“No. My mom.”
Evelyn froze at the word.
My mom.
Then she climbed onto the edge of the stretcher space without hesitation.
“I’m right here.”
Madison looked at Ethan across the room.

Ethan exploded.

The judge slammed the gavel one more time.

Madison was wheeled through the center aisle, Evelyn walking beside her, holding her hand.
The gallery stood back silently.
Some people cried.

As they passed the defense table, Ethan leaned forward and hissed, “Madison, don’t do this.”
She turned her head despite the pain.

“You did this.”
Then the doors opened.
Cold air hit her face.
Police lights reflected off the courthouse steps.
Evelyn bent close.

At the hospital, Madison was rushed to labor and delivery. The baby was early but viable. Her blood pressure was dangerous. The doctors moved fast.
