PART 3: The Search That Never Stopped

PART 3: The Search That Never Stopped
Evelyn Hart had been searching for her daughter for twenty-eight years.
She told the court with a voice that shook only once.
“My daughter was taken from a hospital recovery suite in Philadelphia when she was three days old.”
Madison gripped the edge of the table.
Three days old.
Not abandoned.
Not unwanted.
Taken.
The courtroom seemed to tilt.
Evelyn continued, “The woman who took her was a temporary nurse using a stolen identity. My husband and I were told within hours that our baby had died from a sudden respiratory collapse.”
Madison’s eyes filled.
Evelyn looked at her.
“I never believed it.”
The judge’s face softened, but her voice stayed formal.
“Mrs. Hart, please continue through counsel.”
Evelyn’s lawyer stepped in.
“The Hart family later discovered that the hospital’s internal records had been altered. The infant death certificate was filed under an incorrect middle name, the body was cremated before the family could object, and the attending nurse disappeared.”
Madison whispered, “But I was found after a motel fire.”
Evelyn nodded, tears slipping down her face.
“We know. The same woman who took you died in that fire. You survived. But by then your name had been changed.”
Madison’s chest rose and fell too fast.
Ethan watched her carefully, not with concern.
With calculation.
Carter Mills, Evelyn’s attorney, placed a photograph on the table.
A baby wrapped in a pale yellow blanket.
A hospital bracelet circled one tiny wrist.
MADELINE ROSE HART.
Madison reached for it with trembling fingers.
Her baby kicked hard.
Evelyn moved closer instinctively.
Madison looked at her.
“Why didn’t anyone find me?”
Evelyn broke at the question.
Not loudly.
Just in the eyes.
“Because someone was paid very well to make sure we didn’t.”
Carter Mills opened another file.
“For decades, Mrs. Hart received false leads, altered foster records, sealed files, and blocked DNA notifications. Two months ago, Madison Cross uploaded a genetic sample to a medical ancestry database to screen for pregnancy-related risk factors.”
Madison remembered.
Her doctor had recommended it because she had no family history.
Ethan had seemed strangely interested.
He asked for the login.
He said he would help organize the results.
He told her later the test showed nothing useful.
Carter continued, “That sample matched with a maternal cousin in the Hart family database. The alert should have gone to Madison and Mrs. Hart. It did not.”
Evelyn looked at Ethan.
“Because someone intercepted it.”
Ethan slammed his palm onto the table.
“This is defamation.”
The court officer tightened his grip.
The judge warned, “Mr. Cross, sit down.”
Ethan sat, breathing hard.
Vanessa’s hands were shaking in her lap.
Madison noticed.
So did Evelyn.
Carter Mills turned to the blond woman.
“Vanessa Lowell, you were employed as a data compliance consultant for Cross & Vale Holdings, correct?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Yes.”
“And you had access to Mr. Cross’s private investigative files?”
Her eyes darted to Ethan.
He shook his head slightly.
Everyone saw it.
The judge’s voice cut through the room.
“Ms. Lowell, you will answer the question.”
Vanessa’s voice cracked.
“Yes.”
Madison’s heart pounded.
Carter placed another document on the table.
“Did Mr. Cross instruct you to contact the ancestry platform under Madison’s account and redirect notifications to a private email address?”
Vanessa went pale.
Ethan stood halfway.
“Don’t answer that.”
The judge slammed the gavel.
“Mr. Cross, one more interruption and you will be removed.”
Vanessa stared at the floor.
Her lips trembled.
Then she whispered, “Yes.”
Madison felt the word enter her body like a blade.
Ethan had not only known.
He had blocked her mother from finding her.
Evelyn’s hand tightened around Madison’s shoulder.
Carter Mills spoke again.
“And why did he do that?”
Vanessa started crying.
“Because if the Hart match was confirmed before the divorce, Madison would have power. Money. Protection. And he said she wasn’t supposed to have any of those.”
Madison closed her eyes.
The courtroom disappeared for one second.
All she heard was Ethan’s voice from minutes earlier.
You leave with nothing.
He had never been speaking from anger.

He had been stating the plan.
