Chapter 5 - THE RIVER
The SUV hit the embankment before rolling into shallow water.
Glass shattered.
The airbags exploded.
Elena’s head struck the side window.
The last thing she remembered was Lily screaming her name.
When Elena opened her eyes again, rain was falling through a broken section of the windshield.
Water covered the floor.
Her seat belt would not release.
She tried to turn toward the back seat.
Everything blurred.
“Lily?”
A child was crying.
“Sophie?”
Elena reached behind her.
Her fingers touched nothing.
The rear passenger door was open.
Through the ringing in her ears, Elena heard voices outside.
Margot.
“Take the younger one first.”
Then Silas.
“Move faster.”
Elena tried to call out.
Only a weak sound escaped.
A shadow appeared near her door.
Silas looked inside.
For one second, husband and wife stared at each other.
Elena saw no panic in his face.
No relief that she was alive.
Only calculation.
“Silas,” she whispered.
He stepped backward.
Margot approached him carrying Sophie.
Sophie was conscious.
Her small arms were wrapped around Margot’s neck.
“Mommy!” she screamed.
Elena fought against the seat belt.
Silas closed the driver’s door.
The water muffled Sophie’s cries.
Elena saw Lily being carried toward the black SUV by another man wearing a Mercer Global rain jacket.
Lily’s stuffed rabbit fell into the mud.
The man picked it up and shoved it beneath his arm.
Then Silas’s vehicle drove away.
Elena tried to keep her eyes open.
She could not.
A freight truck passed River Road twelve minutes later.
The driver noticed a broken guardrail and stopped.
He climbed down the embankment, found Elena unconscious, and called emergency services.
By the time rescuers arrived, the rain had erased most of the tire marks.
The open rear door and water damage led them to believe the girls had been swept into the river.
Search teams worked through the night.
They found one child’s shoe.
Sophie’s silver paper moon.
A torn section of Lily’s recital program.
They did not find either child.
Elena woke in the hospital the next morning with a concussion, three cracked ribs, and gaps in her memory.
Silas was sitting beside her bed.
He held her hand when she opened her eyes.
“Elena.”
“The girls?”
His face collapsed into practiced grief.
“They’re still searching.”
She tried to sit up.
Pain tore through her chest.
“I heard Sophie.”
Silas lowered his head.
“You were disoriented.”
“You were there.”
He slowly looked at her.
“I was at the office.”
“No.”
“You suffered a serious head injury.”
“I saw your car.”
“Elena, you drove off a bridge with our daughters.”
The words landed harder than the crash.
She stared at him.
“What?”
He squeezed her hand.
“The police found no other vehicle.”
“That isn’t possible.”
“Margot was with me at the office. There are witnesses.”
Elena began to shake.
Silas leaned close.
“You need to stop inventing things before people decide you are dangerous.”
