Chapter 14 - THE EMPTY COFFINS
Elena reunited with Lily at the hospital shortly after midnight.
Lily ran from the bed with a blanket around her shoulders.
Elena dropped to her knees.
All three held one another on the floor.
For several minutes, no one spoke.
Sophie touched the bruise on Elena’s temple.
“Did Daddy hurt you?”
Elena looked at both girls.
She wanted to protect them from the truth.
But Silas had already filled their minds with lies.
“He caused the car to crash,” she said gently. “The police are making sure he cannot hurt us again.”
Lily looked down.
“I knew he was lying.”
“How?”
“He said you didn’t want us anymore.”
Elena pulled her closer.
“There is nothing in this world that could make me stop wanting you.”
Sophie began crying again.
A doctor examined both children.
They were dehydrated, frightened, and exhausted, but physically unharmed.
The medication found at the lodge had been used to make them sleep during transportation.
Neither child required intensive treatment.
Samantha arrived with the girls’ favorite pajamas and toothbrushes.
Detective Torres came later.
She carried an evidence bag containing Lily’s stuffed rabbit and smartwatch.
“You were very brave,” she told Lily.
Lily looked toward Elena.
“Mom made the watch listen.”
“No,” Elena said. “You remembered how to use it.”
Lily’s recording had captured more than the crash.
At Blackwood Lodge, the watch continued recording until its storage filled.
The audio contained conversations between Margot and the third accomplice, Caleb Dunn, head of Mercer Global’s private security team.
Caleb had been the man who carried Lily from the wreck.
Police arrested him at his apartment.
He immediately requested an attorney.
The traffic footage, smartwatch recordings, fake passports, and evidence from the lodge created an overwhelming kidnapping case.
But investigators still wanted the motive.
They found it in a locked office at Blackwood.
The room contained copies of the girls’ trust documents.
Medical forms prepared to declare Elena mentally incapacitated.
A draft court petition naming Silas temporary trustee.
And a report showing that Mercer Global would default on its debt within twelve days.
Silas had planned for Elena to die in the river.
Once she was dead, he would become the successor trustee and use Lily and Sophie’s shares to rescue his company.
The girls were never supposed to be declared dead.
They were supposed to disappear briefly while Silas secured control.
When Elena survived, he changed the plan.
He staged a public memorial.
He intended to have Elena declared unstable, force her to transfer authority, and then move the girls overseas under false identities.
The ceremonial coffins were part of the deception.
They were built to bury Elena’s credibility.
Instead, they became the place where his crime was exposed.
The following morning, police removed both coffins from the chapel.
Elena asked that the white flowers be delivered to the hospital.
