Chapter 7 - The Competency Trap

Lily’s tablet held more than pictures of the house file.
It held audio.
Not perfect audio.
A child’s recording from behind a hallway wall.
But clear enough.
Matthew’s voice:
Once she’s in Paris, Sloan can’t stop the emergency petition before closing.
Another man’s voice:
You still need the competency paperwork clean.
Matthew:
The doctor signed. Mom won’t challenge it from overseas.
Eleanor listened in Margaret Sloan’s office that afternoon, wrapped in a blanket, passport beside her, Lily sitting close enough to hold her hand.
Karen sat on Lily’s other side.
For once, no adult told the child she had imagined things.
No one told her she was confused.
No one told her to stop making trouble.
They listened.
Margaret replayed the audio twice.
Then removed her glasses.
“The flight was not just about the house.”
Eleanor already knew.
But she needed to hear it.
Margaret continued.
“Matthew planned to file an emergency competency petition after your departure. The forged medical statement would claim you voluntarily traveled for extended care because you could no longer live independently.”
Eleanor’s stomach turned.
Karen whispered, “He was going to say she left willingly?”
“Yes.”
“And while she was gone?”
“He would ask the court for temporary authority over property, finances, and medical decisions.”
Lily’s eyes filled.
“He said Grandma wouldn’t know how to come home.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
That was the part that cut deepest.
Not the house.
The belief that she would be too old, too frightened, too dependent to fight her way back.
Matthew had not only tried to steal her home.
He had tried to steal the world’s belief in her mind.
Margaret placed the forged competency statement on the desk.
“This doctor never examined you in person.”
Eleanor looked at the signature.
“Can we prove that?”
Karen leaned forward.
“I can.”
Everyone turned to her.
Karen pulled a folder from her bag.
“I’ve been documenting Matthew for two years. Custody manipulation, financial coercion, false claims about my mental health. He used the same clinic to try to limit my custody.”
Lily gripped Eleanor’s hand tighter.
Karen’s voice trembled, but she kept going.
“I thought no one would believe me because he always sounded calm.”
Eleanor looked at her former daughter-in-law.
For the first time, she saw not the bitter woman Matthew had described, but another person he had isolated with polished lies.
“I’m sorry,” Eleanor said.
Karen’s eyes filled.
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have asked.”
Karen nodded slowly.
“Maybe. But we’re asking now.”
The room became quiet.
Then Margaret stood.
“Good. Then we file today.”
Emergency injunction.
Fraud complaint.
Adult protective services report.
Custody protection for Lily.
Criminal referral for forgery, coercion, elder exploitation, and attempted property fraud.
Matthew thought sending Eleanor across the ocean would make her unreachable.

Instead, he had placed her in the one airport full of cameras, officers, and witnesses.
👉 The competency papers exposed Matthew’s full plan, but Eleanor still had to face him again before the court froze everything he tried to steal.
