Chapter 4 - Gate A12

Matthew tightened his hand around Eleanor’s passport when the officers approached.
He recovered quickly.
He always did.
“Is there a problem?” he asked.
Officer Moore stopped in front of Eleanor first, not Matthew.
That mattered.
“Ma’am, are you Eleanor Hayes?”
Eleanor nodded.
“Yes.”
“Are you traveling voluntarily today?”
Matthew answered for her.
“She’s nervous. She doesn’t fly well.”
Officer Moore did not look at him.
“Mrs. Hayes, I need you to answer.”
Eleanor felt Matthew’s presence beside her like a wall.
For months, he had spoken over her.
To doctors.
To neighbors.
To bank clerks.
To anyone who might still believe she had her own mind.
Her fingers closed around Lily’s note.
Then she lifted her chin.
“No.”
Matthew’s head snapped toward her.
“Mom.”
Officer Moore’s expression sharpened.
“No, you are not traveling voluntarily?”
Eleanor’s voice shook, but the word held.
“No.”
The second officer stepped slightly between Matthew and Eleanor.
Matthew smiled tightly.
“My mother is grieving. She gets confused under stress.”
Eleanor turned to him.
“I know where I am.”
His nostrils flared.
“Mom, don’t embarrass yourself.”
For a second, pain flashed through her.
Not fear.
Pain.
Because this was still her son.
The boy she had packed lunches for.
The teenager she had driven to soccer games.
The man who had once cried against her shoulder after his wife left.
And now he stood in an airport trying to make her disappear.
Officer Moore held out her hand.
“May I see the note?”
Eleanor gave it to her.
Matthew lunged half a step.
“Careful,” the other officer said.
Matthew stopped.
Officer Moore read the note.
Her mouth tightened.
Then she turned to Matthew.
“Sir, I need the passport.”
“It’s in my possession for safekeeping.”
“It belongs to her.”
“She misplaces things.”
“Passport.”
Matthew hesitated.
That hesitation said too much.
He handed it over.
Officer Moore returned it to Eleanor directly.
Then she looked at the boarding pass in Matthew’s other hand.
“One-way ticket?”
Matthew laughed.
“Open return.”
Moore looked at the screen.
“No return booked.”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Even though she knew.
Hearing it confirmed still hurt.
The officer’s radio crackled.
“Attorney Sloan is on the line. Says she represents Eleanor Hayes. Requesting hold on travel. Possible property fraud.”
Matthew’s face changed completely.
“Sloan?” he whispered.
Eleanor heard the fear in his voice.
Not anger.
Fear.
He knew that name.
Which meant Lily’s message had reached more than the airport.
Officer Moore asked, “Mr. Hayes, did you attempt to place your mother on an international flight today while a property transfer involving her residence is scheduled?”
Matthew recovered enough to sneer.
“This is a family matter.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“No,” she said softly. “It became a crime when you used my name.”
Matthew stared at her like she had slapped him.
Maybe she had.
Not with her hand.
May you like
With the truth.
👉 Eleanor was escorted away from the gate, but the real race was already happening across town at the house Matthew thought he had stolen.
