Chapter 15 - THE VOICE BEHIND MY FATHER’S ARCHIVE

Nancy was breathing when they carried her out of Halcyon Warehouse.
That was the only fact I allowed myself to feel.
Her skin was pale, and an oxygen mask covered half her face, but her chest rose and fell. Dr. Miles climbed into the ambulance beside her while another physician monitored the damaged intestine around the remaining magnets.
I rode with them.
Police transported Evelyn separately under guard. Daniel was detained. Rebecca and Claire were taken to different hospitals. Brandon remained at the warehouse answering questions.
Leonard Price disappeared with the dead-man token.
The Halcyon archive continued its thirty-minute countdown.
Twenty-seven minutes.
Twenty-six.
Detective Vega called from the command vehicle.
“Price’s sedan was found near Mission Valley. Engine running. No driver.”
“Did he have the cylinder?”
“No.”
“Where would he go?”
“We’re checking his office, house, airport, and border crossings.”
My phone displayed the archive’s recipient list.
CLAIRE MORGAN—DECEASED.
I opened the recipient profile.
The account had been created eleven years earlier using a Social Security number issued to Claire.
But the linked facial verification photograph showed Evelyn.
Evelyn had been operating financial accounts under Claire’s legal identity after Claire was committed to Crescent Ridge.
The woman in Room 814 could still be Claire.
The dead identity in the archive referred to the legal record Evelyn created, not the living person.
That answered one question.
It opened a worse one.
Why had my father listed a woman the government considered dead?
The countdown reached nineteen minutes.
A file preview appeared.
HALE-MORGAN PARTNERSHIP: BENEFICIARY MANIPULATION, PEDIATRIC TRUSTS, SUBJECTS 1–8.
Subjects.
Not accounts.
Children.
Owen was not the first child harmed for access to a trust.
Nancy was not the second.
There were at least eight.
My hands began shaking.
Detective Vega saw the preview through the shared screen.
“We need the full archive.”
“Can it release without the token?”
“The system says the token was removed after activation. Release is continuing.”
“Then why did Price steal it?”
“To change what gets released—or who receives it.”
At the hospital, Nancy was rushed directly into imaging.
I stood outside the scanner while the countdown continued.
Fifteen minutes.
Brandon arrived under police escort.
His suit was torn, and blood stained one cuff. He tried to approach me.
Officer Elliott stopped him.
“I need to talk to Samantha.”
“You can talk from there.”
Brandon looked through the glass at Nancy.
“Mom didn’t build this alone.”
“I know.”
“Leonard has represented our family for thirty years. He created the shell companies. He arranged Daniel’s identity.”
“Why didn’t you tell police?”
“Because Leonard has copies of everything I signed.”
“You mean evidence.”
“He said if I cooperated, Nancy would disappear permanently.”
I stared at him.
“She already disappeared.”
“I thought he meant after the hospital. I didn’t know Mom would move today.”
Every confession arrived one injury too late.
The archive reached ten minutes.
A call came from an encrypted number.
Detective Vega joined remotely. Officer Elliott activated a recorder.
I answered.
Leonard Price’s voice was smooth.
“You activated a system your father never intended you to see.”
“Where is the token?”
“Safe.”
“You helped Evelyn poison children.”
“I helped Evelyn preserve a structure built by your father.”
The accusation made no sense.
“My father tried to expose her.”
“Your father created the pediatric trusts.”
“For families.”
“For research subjects.”
The hospital corridor seemed to narrow around me.
Leonard continued.
“Halcyon’s early imaging technology was tested through a private observational program. Children from financially vulnerable families were enrolled through trusts. Their medical events generated data. Evelyn did not invent the system. She inherited it.”
“You’re lying.”
“That is what your father told himself after the first child died.”
The archive countdown reached seven minutes.
A new file unlocked.
It contained a scanned contract bearing my father’s signature.
Beside it was another signature.
EVELYN HALE.
The contract predated my marriage to Brandon by sixteen years.
It described a program called MAGNETIC INGESTION RESPONSE STUDY.
My stomach heaved.
The signature looked real.
But one detail was wrong.
My father’s middle initial was R.
The contract showed P.
A forgery.
Unless someone else had signed his name.
Leonard seemed to know what I was seeing.
“The initial is not a mistake,” he said.
“Who signed it?”
“You have spent your entire life believing Robert Ellison was your biological father.”
My breath stopped.
At the end of the corridor, the elevator doors opened.
Claire Morgan stepped out in a hospital gown, supported by Detective Vega.
She should have been in another hospital across the county.
Blood darkened the bandage near her temple.
In her hand was the dead-man token.
“I took it from Leonard,” she said.
Vega reached for the cylinder.
Claire pulled away.
“Don’t.”
The archive reached three minutes.
Brandon stared at Claire as though he recognized something I didn’t.
“Where’s Leonard?” he asked.
Claire looked at me.
“Leonard Price is dead.”
Officer Elliott drew his weapon.
Detective Vega moved between us.
Claire raised the cylinder and pressed a hidden switch.
The archive countdown froze at two minutes and seventeen seconds.
Then every phone in the corridor rang simultaneously.
Mine displayed an incoming video call labeled:
ROBERT ELLISON—LIVE AUTHORIZATION.
My father had been dead for six years.
Claire answered before anyone could stop her.
The screen showed an older man seated in darkness, his face partly obscured.
He lifted his head.
He had my blue eyes.
“Samantha,” he said, “do not give Claire the second witness key—she was the one who chose Nancy.”
Behind him, Leonard Price stepped into the light, alive and uninjured.

Then Claire locked her arm around my neck and pressed the steel cylinder against my daughter’s hospital-room access panel.
