Chapter 13 - THE BROTHER WHO NEVER DIED

The video remained live.

Daniel—Caleb—stood beside Evelyn as if twelve missing years had collapsed into one room.

Claire was not visible.

Rebecca was not visible.

Nancy looked barely conscious.

“What did you give her?” I demanded.

Evelyn lifted the silver tin.

“Nothing new.”

Dr. Miles leaned toward the screen.

“Her IV line may be delivering a sedative. We need the location now.”

Detective Vega’s team was already moving toward the warehouse district, but they had several possible buildings.

Daniel stepped closer to the camera.

“My mother told Claire that Owen swallowed magnets while playing. That was a lie. She made me feed them to him.”

His voice cracked, but his eyes stayed dry.

“She said Owen needed to appear sick so she could move money from his trust. I believed she knew how to control the dose.”

Claire had told me Daniel supported Evelyn’s accusation against her.

Now I understood why.

He had been protecting himself.

“When Owen died,” Daniel continued, “Mom said Claire would expose both of us. She arranged the boating accident and gave me a new identity. In return, I maintained her digital systems.”

“You helped her do this to Nancy.”

“I tried to stop it.”

“You deleted the cameras.”

“To remove the files she planted against you.”

“You entered my house with magnet packaging.”

“She put it in my case.”

His answers resembled Brandon’s—each man claiming to be trapped by the same woman while continuing to serve her.

Evelyn listened with a faint smile.

She did not fear Daniel’s confession.

That told me it was incomplete.

“Show me Claire,” I said.

Daniel glanced off-screen.

Evelyn’s smile widened.

“She’s alive for now.”

The camera shifted.

Claire sat tied to a chair near a steel loading door. Rebecca lay on the floor beside her, moving weakly.

Nancy lifted her head.

“Mommy.”

“I’m here.”

“I found Grandpa’s key.”

Evelyn’s hand tightened around the phone.

My daughter pointed toward the silver candy tin.

“The long shiny one.”

Evelyn struck the camera away.

The image spun, showing the ceiling and part of a warehouse sign before landing sideways.

H-A-L-C-Y—

Halcyon.

The archive’s name was also the name of the building.

Detective Vega saw it.

She radioed the tactical team.

Only one warehouse in the area had once belonged to Halcyon Medical Imaging—my father’s company. It had been sold after his death and recently leased by a Crescent Ridge subsidiary.

Police were eight minutes away.

Evelyn picked up the phone.

“You think you’ve won something,” she said. “But Daniel has told you only the part that protects him.”

Daniel reached for her.

She stepped back and opened the candy tin.

Inside lay dozens of blue-wrapped sweets and a narrow steel cylinder.

The dead-man token.

“Bring Brandon,” Evelyn said. “I need his fingerprint too.”

Brandon stared at the screen.

“You said only Samantha and Nancy could open it.”

“That opens the archive. Your fingerprint disables the release.”

He shook his head.

“I’m not going.”

Evelyn turned the camera toward Nancy’s IV pump.

Her finger rested on the dosage control.

“You already sacrificed one child because you were afraid of me,” she said. “Will you sacrifice another because you finally found a conscience?”

Brandon lunged for the phone in Detective Vega’s hand as if he could reach through it.

“I’ll come!”

Leonard Price tried to stop him.

Brandon shoved the attorney away.

Then Daniel spoke from the warehouse.

“No, little brother. Tell Samantha what you did the night Owen died.”

Brandon went still.

Evelyn’s finger remained on the IV control.

I looked at my husband.

“What did you do?”

His lips trembled.

“I changed Owen’s X-ray.”

The room seemed to tilt.

He had been twenty-three, working as a hospital finance intern. Evelyn asked him to replace the scan showing twenty-four magnets with one showing only three, delaying emergency surgery.

“But I didn’t know he would die,” Brandon whispered.

Daniel’s face twisted with rage.

“You heard him screaming.”

“I was scared.”

“You watched them blame Claire.”

Brandon sank into a chair.

“I thought Mom would protect all of us.”

On the live feed, Evelyn pressed the IV control once.

Nancy’s eyes closed.

Dr. Miles shouted, “That dose could suppress her breathing!”

The tactical commander reported units arriving at Halcyon Warehouse.

Then every light inside the building went out.

The video became black.
