Chapter 13 - THE BOARDROOM COUP

Margaret went to Hayes Strategic Holdings at eight in the morning.
The board meeting had already begun without her.
She entered wearing the same white trousers and silk top from the restaurant. Her blazer remained around Eli’s shoulders at the penthouse.
Twelve directors sat around the long glass table.
Owen’s chair was empty.
Evelyn occupied the seat beside it.
Despite the police investigation, she looked composed.
A screen on the wall displayed headlines.
BILLIONAIRE EXECUTIVE LINKED TO MISSING CHILDREN
HOMELESS BOYS FOUND IN HAYES PROPERTY
FORMER HUSBAND MAY BE ALIVE
Margaret closed the door.
“Turn that off.”
The chairman, Leonard Bishop, folded his hands.
“Margaret, we’re concerned about your judgment.”
“My judgment built the company you’re sitting in.”
“And your personal crisis is now threatening it.”
“My company laundered payments connected to child trafficking.”
Several directors shifted.
Evelyn looked at her.
“That allegation has not been established.”
“Neither has my instability, yet you seem comfortable discussing it.”
Leonard cleared his throat.
“We’ve voted to place you on temporary administrative leave.”
Margaret stared at him.
“You voted before I arrived.”
“We had quorum.”
“Who proposed the motion?”
Evelyn answered.
“I did.”
Margaret expected pain.
Instead, she felt clarity.
Evelyn had never been merely protective.
She had been positioning herself.
Margaret placed a folder on the table.
“Before you remove me, you should review the emergency audit.”
She slid copies toward the directors.
The documents showed payments from Hayes subsidiaries to Voss-linked medical foundations, private transport firms, and shell adoption agencies.
Some signatures belonged to Owen.
Others belonged to Evelyn.
Evelyn barely glanced at them.
“These approvals are forged.”
“Then you’ll welcome a criminal review.”
Leonard stood.
“This meeting is over.”
“No,” Margaret said. “It is beginning.”
The boardroom doors opened.
Detectives entered with warrants.
Evelyn’s composure cracked.
Only slightly.
One detective approached her.
“Evelyn Shaw, we need your devices and access credentials.”
She looked at Margaret.
“You have no idea what you’ve done.”
“I finally stopped letting you decide what I could survive.”
The detective took Evelyn’s phone.
Another officer began imaging the boardroom computers.
Margaret’s phone vibrated.
A message from the unknown number.
A photograph showed Noah and Eli inside her penthouse.
Rosa lay unconscious on the kitchen floor.
Margaret’s blood turned cold.
She called security.
No answer.
She called Noah.
The line connected.
At first, she heard only breathing.
Then Noah whispered, “They look like Dad.”
Margaret gripped the table.
“Who?”
“Two men.”
Michael had remained at the penthouse.
Or claimed he had.
“Where are you?”
“In the closet with Eli.”
“Stay quiet. Police are coming.”
A man’s voice sounded in the background.
“Noah, open the door.”
Daniel’s voice.
Then another voice, nearly identical.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Noah breathed faster.
Margaret moved toward the boardroom exit.
Evelyn blocked her.
The detective caught Evelyn’s arm.
She struggled for the first time.
“You cannot go back there.”
“My children are there.”
Evelyn stared at her.
“Which children?”
Margaret froze.
Evelyn’s face twisted with something that looked almost like grief.
“You still don’t understand. Rebecca never wanted Noah and Eli. She wanted you to claim them publicly.”
“Why?”
“So the surviving twin could prove you stole his identity.”
Margaret pushed past her.
Her phone remained connected.
A crash sounded from the penthouse.
Eli cried out.
Then Noah whispered one final sentence.
May you like
“One of them has your other pendant.”
The call ended.
