Chapter 8 - Luca Arrives

Luca landed in Rhode Island two hours after the ceremony collapsed.
By then, the estate looked like the aftermath of a beautiful storm.
Guests leaving in stunned clusters.
Vendors quietly packing food.
Photographers checking contracts.
Vanessa crying somewhere upstairs.
Elaine demanding someone “fix this.”
Mara sat alone in the garden behind the estate, still holding the bent envelope.
She had turned off her phone after the hundredth message.
Luca found her by the fountain.
He did not speak at first.
He sat beside her on the stone bench and took her hand.
Only then did Mara begin to cry.
Not dramatically.
Not loudly.
Just tears falling down her face while she stared at the winter roses.
“I didn’t want this,” she said.
“I know.”
“I kept thinking if I stayed quiet, they would stop needing to hurt me.”
Luca kissed her knuckles.
“People who benefit from your silence rarely stop on their own.”
Mara closed her eyes.
“She threw Dad’s hairpin.”
Luca’s face tightened.
That hurt him more than the canceled wedding.
He knew what the hairpin meant.
He knew Richard Ellis had been the only person in Mara’s childhood who had looked at her like she was enough.
“What do you want to do?” he asked.
Mara wiped her face.
“Go home.”
“To Italy?”
She looked around the estate.
Then at the envelope.
“No. To our home. Wherever you are.”
Luca smiled sadly.
“That can be arranged.”
Before they left, Catherine Reed found them.
Julian was with her.
He looked wrecked but steady.
“I owe you both an apology,” he said.
Mara shook her head.
“No, you don’t.”
“I believed things about you because they were convenient to believe. That is still a choice.”
That sentence made Mara look at him differently.
Accountability without performance.
Rare.
Catherine turned to Luca.
“Our family will cover the cancellation obligations tied to our side.”
Luca said calmly, “Santoro Hospitality will review the contract and separate legitimate costs from charges created under false representation.”
Julian nodded.
“Fair.”
Then he looked at Mara.
“Did Vanessa know you arranged the venue?”
“No.”
Elaine’s voice cut from behind them.
“She arranged it to control us.”
Everyone turned.
Elaine stood on the garden path, cheeks flushed from anger and humiliation.
Vanessa stood behind her, now in a robe with no tiara, mascara streaked down her face.
Luca rose slowly.
His presence changed the air.
Elaine looked him up and down.
“You must be very proud. You bought my daughter a crown and let her destroy her sister’s wedding.”
Mara stood.
“Stop.”
Elaine ignored her.
“She has always done this. Quiet little martyr. Making everyone owe her.”
Luca’s voice was calm.
“No one owed Mara kindness. That was the problem.”
Vanessa wiped her face.
“You ruined my life.”
Mara looked at her.
“Your life is not ruined because one wedding stopped.”
“My marriage is over.”
“Then maybe it was never a marriage.”
Vanessa recoiled.
Elaine pointed at Mara.
“You think he loves you? Men like him collect women like stories.”
Luca stepped forward then.
Not angry.
Protective.
“Mrs. Ellis, you threw your late husband’s gift onto a vanity because it came from the daughter you trained yourself not to value. Do not speak to my wife about love.”
Elaine went silent.
For once, someone with power had named her clearly.
Vanessa looked at Mara.
Her voice was small.
“Did you really pay for the venue?”
Mara answered honestly.
“I helped secure it.”
“Why?”
Mara looked at the bent envelope.
“Because I thought if I kept giving, one day you’d see me.”
Vanessa had no answer.
Mara placed the envelope on the stone bench.
Not in Vanessa’s hands.
Not at Elaine’s feet.
Between them.
“Dad’s hairpin is inside. Do whatever you want with it. I’m done proving I loved this family.”
Then she walked away with Luca.

This time, no one stopped her.
👉 Mara finally left with the man who honored her, but the financial consequences of Vanessa’s canceled wedding were just beginning.
