Chapter 1

The C-130 was shaking so hard the bolts in the floor looked alive.
Red lights glowed over the cargo bay.
Wind screamed outside the metal skin of the aircraft.
Twenty-three soldiers sat shoulder to shoulder on the side benches, rifles across their knees, faces painted, jaws tight.
And at the very back, alone, sat Callaway.
No one sat beside her.
No one asked why.
Her rifle rested between her boots.
A blacked-out mission folder lay half-hidden beside her rucksack.
Most of the pages were covered in thick black ink.
Name.
Unit.
Previous deployment.
Combat history.
All gone.
Only one line near the bottom had not been fully erased.
CALL SIGN: █████
Lieutenant Aaron Grayson noticed it the moment she boarded.
He also noticed the empty sleeves.
No visible combat patch.
No ribbons displayed.
No stories.
No jokes.
Just a quiet woman sitting in the back like she had been placed there by mistake.
To Grayson, that meant one thing.
Liability.
He walked down the vibrating aisle and stopped in front of her.
Then he turned his head slightly, making sure the whole platoon could hear him.
“Keep her in the back where she can’t get anyone killed.”
A few soldiers laughed under their breath.
One private looked away, uncomfortable.
Callaway didn’t move.
She simply lifted her eyes.
Calm.
Flat.
Unblinking.
Grayson leaned closer.
“You even fired that rifle outside training?”
The question hung in the aircraft.
Cruel.
Loud.
Designed to make her small.
Callaway looked at him for one long second.
Then she answered.
“Not where people survived to talk about it.”
The laughter faded.
Not all at once.
Slowly.
May you like
Like men realizing they had laughed before understanding the joke.
