Chapter 8

For one moment, the mess hall saw something no medal could explain.
A commander standing alive because a dog remembered what duty smelled like.
A handler standing humiliated because the man who failed had been allowed to keep power.
Vale straightened.
“Lieutenant Reed, you are relieved of duty pending investigation.”
Reed went white.
“Sir?”
“You assaulted a subordinate, falsified a statement in front of witnesses, and your actions during Operation Sand Harbor are now under review.”
Reed shook his head.
“You can’t reopen that.”
Vale looked at him.
“I already did.”
Two military police officers entered through the side door.
Reed stared at them.
Then at Claire.
“You planned this.”
Claire’s voice was calm.
“No. You did this in front of a room full of witnesses.”
The MPs stepped beside Reed.
He looked around for support.
No one gave it.
Not the men who laughed.
Not the operators he thought belonged to him.
Not the sailors who had watched him bully people for months and finally saw fear lose its grip.
As they escorted him toward the doors, Titan moved one step closer to Claire.
Reed stopped and looked back.
His face was full of hate.
“You’re still just support.”
Claire looked at Titan.
Then at Commander Vale.
Then at every soldier in the mess hall.
“No,” she said. “I’m the support that keeps people alive.”
The doors closed behind Reed.
For several seconds, no one moved.
Then the young Marine who had spoken first stepped forward.
“Ma’am,” he said, “I’m sorry I laughed.”
Claire looked at him.
He looked ashamed.
Young.
Scared.
Trying to become better than what he had just been part of.
Claire nodded.
“Next time, don’t wait for a commander to walk in.”
He swallowed.
May you like
“Yes, ma’am.”
