Chapter 9

By the time Cross returned to the command center, Hale was already in surgery.
Her uniform was covered in dust and smoke.
A cut ran along her cheek.
She walked back into the same room where Willis had humiliated her less than an hour earlier.
This time, no one looked at her like she was out of control.
They looked at her like she had walked through death and dragged the truth out by its collar.
Willis stood near the map.
“You disobeyed a direct order,” he said.
His voice was weaker now.
Cross removed her helmet.
“And saved him.”
“You launched an unauthorized assault.”
Maddox turned from the screen.
“Authorized by me.”
Willis blinked.
“You don’t have operational command.”
Maddox lifted his tablet.
“No. But I have intelligence authority. And now I have testimony from Staff Sergeant Hale.”
Willis’s face went blank.
Cross watched him carefully.
There it was.
Fear.
Maddox tapped the screen.
“The convoy route change came from your terminal.”
Willis said nothing.
“The request to delay rescue came from you.”
Still nothing.
“And the enemy transmission included a phrase from your private mission brief. A brief only four people had access to.”
Willis looked at the officers around him.
No one stepped forward.
No one defended him.
He had spent years using rank to silence rooms.
Now the room had become his witness.
Cross stepped toward him.
“You called it emotion because you needed everyone to stop looking at the facts.”
Willis’s mouth opened.
No words came.
“You weren’t protecting the mission,” she said. “You were protecting yourself.”
Military police entered.
This time, they did not stand by the door.

They walked straight to Willis.
