PART 6: The Dog They Couldn’t Bury

PART 6: The Dog They Couldn’t Bury
Rex opened his eyes at 1:18 a.m.
Only for a few seconds.
But Luke saw it.
He saw the focus return.
He saw Rex search the room until he found his face.
Then Rex gave one weak thump of his tail.
Luke broke.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
He just folded forward, both hands covering his mouth, tears slipping through his fingers.
Emma smiled for the first time since Rex came in.
“He’s responding.”
Luke laughed once through tears.
“Hey, buddy,” he whispered. “You scared the hell out of me.”
Rex blinked slowly.
Then closed his eyes again.
But he was there.
Really there.
By morning, his breathing had strengthened.
By afternoon, he lifted his head.
By the next day, he tried to stand and immediately looked offended when his legs didn’t cooperate.
Emma gently pushed him back down.
“Absolutely not, hero. You are on bed rest.”
Luke rubbed Rex’s ear.
“You heard the doctor.”
For a brief moment, the clinic felt warm again.
Then the outside world rushed back in.
Mercer denied everything.
His attorney claimed the collar had been tampered with after sign-out.
He claimed the toxicology results were inconclusive.
He claimed Luke’s bond with Rex made him unreliable.
He claimed Emma was trying to turn a tragic accident into a conspiracy.
That last part made Luke stand up from his chair.
Emma stopped him with one look.
“Don’t,” she said. “Let the evidence speak.”
And it did.
The hidden device matched materials found in Mercer’s garage.
The immobilizing drug had been ordered under a fake veterinary supply account linked to one of Mercer’s burner emails.
The warehouse owner began cooperating.
Then the flash drive revealed the message that made even veteran detectives go silent.
Need the dog neutralized before a second search. If he alerts again, we’re done.
Another message followed.
Prep the report on Bennett. If the animal drops, blame handler error and close it fast.
Luke read those words in Donnelly’s office.
For a long time, he said nothing.
Then he asked, “Did he ever care about either of us?”
Donnelly’s face softened.
“I don’t know.”
Emma, who had come to give a medical statement, answered from beside him.
“No,” she said. “People who care don’t turn trust into a weapon.”
Mercer was arrested that afternoon.
At headquarters.
In front of officers who once followed his orders.
Luke was not there to watch.
He stayed with Rex.
Revenge could wait.
His partner waking up could not.
That evening, Rex pushed his nose into Emma’s wrist while she checked his vitals.
She looked surprised.
Luke smiled.
“He likes you.”
Emma scratched lightly behind Rex’s ear.
“He has excellent judgment.”
Rex gave another tiny tail thump.
Luke looked at both of them and felt something in his chest loosen.
Mercer had tried to destroy the two things Luke trusted most.
His partner.
His name.
But Mercer had not counted on Emma Harper.
A doctor who refused to sign death before truth.
A woman who noticed one tiny mark and followed it all the way into corruption.
Still, one piece remained.
The department had cleared Luke privately.
But publicly, whispers were still moving.

And Mercer’s attorney was about to use them in the hearing.
👉 Rex was alive, Mercer was arrested, but Luke’s name would not be fully cleared until one final hearing changed everything.
