Chapter 1 - The Shadow Beneath the Stands

Rex’s growl rolled through the metal framework beneath the bleachers.
It was not loud.
It did not need to be.
The sound carried through Daniel Mercer’s hand where his palm rested against the cold aluminum support beam. It vibrated through the dirt beneath his knees and into the silence of the football stadium above them.
Daniel raised his military radio but did not press the transmit button.
Ten feet inside the narrow darkness, the six-year-old girl’s trembling fingers tightened around Rex’s black working collar.
Only her hand was visible.
One pale sleeve.
One small sneaker turned sideways in the dirt.
Rex stood over her with his broad body angled toward the deeper shadows. His ears were forward. His weight had shifted onto his front paws. Every muscle beneath his black-and-tan coat had gone rigid.
He was not looking at the child.
He was watching something behind her.

Daniel reached down and picked up the medical bracelet he had retrieved moments earlier. Its tiny green light flashed against his palm.
The printed name had been rubbed away, but the back contained a number.
Not a hospital number.
Not an emergency contact.
Six digits stamped beneath a faded blue triangle.
Daniel had seen that symbol before.
He could not remember where.
The mother pushed against Emily’s arm.
“Why aren’t you getting her out?”
“Because Rex is protecting her from something,” Daniel said.
The words silenced everyone close enough to hear them.
Then the floodlights over the eastern end of the stadium snapped off.
Half the bleachers fell into darkness.
People screamed.
Daniel dropped flat as a sharp movement passed behind the child.
Rex barked once.
The girl’s hand disappeared.
“Lily!” her mother shrieked.
Daniel lunged forward, reaching into the opening until the metal edge cut into his shoulder.
“Rex!”
The dog moved deeper.
For two seconds, Daniel heard claws scraping dirt and a child struggling to breathe.
Then Rex emerged backward, pulling the girl by the fabric of her unicorn hoodie.
Her face remained hidden against the dog’s shoulder.
Daniel caught her beneath the arms and dragged her toward the opening.
Something seized her ankle from inside.
Her body jerked backward.
Daniel locked both hands around her chest.
Rex spun and snapped at the darkness without making contact.
The grip released.
Daniel pulled the child out and rolled with her onto the concrete.
The mother dropped beside them, sobbing as she reached for the little girl.
But Daniel stopped her.
Lily’s eyes were open.
She was conscious.
Her lips moved without sound.
Daniel lowered his ear to her mouth.
She forced out three trembling words.
“He took another.”
Before Daniel could ask who, the maintenance door beneath the far end of the bleachers slammed open.

A hooded figure ran into the darkness beyond the stadium fence.
Rex tore free from Emily’s grip and sprinted after him.
