PART 7: Lantern Still Burns

PART 7: Lantern Still Burns
The forward medical station was set up in a closed airport hangar near the coast.
Madison waited beside an ambulance with Ranger pressed against her leg.
The night air smelled like salt, fuel, and rain.
Every minute felt cruel.
She had spent nine months mourning Ethan.
Now she had to spend one more hour not knowing if hope was another kind of punishment.
The SEAL team moved on the abandoned facility just before dawn.
Madison did not see the operation.
She heard fragments over the radio.
“Entry made.”
“Multiple rooms clear.”
“Medical bay located.”
“Possible detainee records.”
Then silence.
Too much silence.
Ranger stood suddenly.
His ears went forward.
Madison’s heart began to pound.
The radio crackled.
“Found one.”
Madison stopped breathing.
Another voice came through.
“Male. Alive. Critical but conscious.”
Her knees almost gave out.
Ranger barked once.
Sharp.
Certain.
The senior officer at the hangar looked toward Madison.
“Prepare medical intake.”
The ambulance doors opened.
Minutes later, headlights cut through the rain.
A convoy rushed into the hangar.
Madison stood frozen as medics moved around her.
Then she saw him.
Ethan.
Pale.
Thinner.
Bearded.
Strapped to a stretcher.
But his eyes were open.
Madison covered her mouth.
Ethan turned his head weakly.
For a second, he looked confused.
Then he saw Ranger.
The dog broke from Madison before anyone could stop him, but he did not jump on the stretcher. He dropped beside it, pressed his body low to the floor, and whined.
Ethan’s hand moved slowly.
His fingers touched Ranger’s head.
“Good boy,” he rasped.
Madison stepped closer.
Ethan’s eyes found her.
Everything else disappeared.
The hangar.
The officers.
The rain.
The months.
The empty funeral.
The folded flag.
Madison leaned over him, shaking so hard she could barely speak.
“You told me not to wait up.”
Ethan’s mouth trembled into the smallest smile.
“I was late.”
She laughed and cried at the same time.
Then she touched his face like she was afraid he would vanish.
“You were dead.”
His eyes filled.
“I know.”
“Don’t ever do that again.”
“I’ll try not to get ambushed by a defense contractor next time.”
She wanted to be angry.
She wanted to hit his shoulder.
She wanted to collapse.
Instead, she pressed her forehead to his.
“You came back.”
Ethan’s voice broke.
“Ranger brought me back.”
Madison looked down at the dog.
Ranger had his head on Ethan’s stretcher, one paw touching Madison’s boot.
A bridge between both of them.
The SEAL approached quietly.
His face was bruised. His uniform was soaked. His eyes were full of something close to peace.
“Shepherd is in custody,” he said. “Northstar Meridian’s servers are seized. The extraction site had records, payments, and prisoner transfers.”
Madison closed her eyes.
Consequences.
Finally.
Ethan gripped her fingers weakly.
“Madison.”
She looked at him.
“There’s one more thing.”
Her chest tightened.
“What?”
Ethan turned his eyes toward the SEAL.
The SEAL lowered his head.
Ethan whispered, “They were told not to tell you I might be alive. But he disobeyed orders bringing Ranger to your clinic.”
Madison looked at the SEAL.
The man who had warned her away.
The man who had dragged Ranger back.
The man who looked afraid when she said Lantern.
“You knew bringing him to me could end your career,” she said.
The SEAL nodded.
“Ethan saved my life. I owed him the chance to have his wife save his.”
Madison’s anger finally softened into something heavier.
Gratitude.
Not clean.
But real.
Ethan squeezed her hand.
“Lantern still burns,” he whispered.
Madison kissed his forehead.
May you like
“Yes,” she said. “It does.”
👉 Ethan was alive, Shepherd was caught, but Madison still had to face the command that buried her husband before he was dead.
