PART 5: The Trap At The Door

PART 5: The Trap At The Door

Camila held Noah closer.

Daniel looked terrible.

Unshaven.

Restless.

Like a man who knew he was wrong but still wanted everyone else to make it easy for him.

“Move,” Camila said.

Daniel shook his head.

“We need to talk first.”

“No. We talked for months. You didn’t listen.”

Vivian folded her arms.

“Do you know how unstable you look right now? Sneaking out at dawn with a baby?”

Camila looked at her.

“I am leaving a house where my son’s medication was hidden.”

Vivian’s expression flickered.

Only for a second.

Robert saw it and stepped forward.

“You are not taking my grandson in that car.”

“My car,” Camila said.

“Our driveway,” Robert snapped.

Camila looked past him to the windows.

Outside, morning light touched the hood of her Range Rover.

Freedom was thirty feet away.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Cam, please. Don’t make me choose.”

Camila’s face changed.

Because that was when she finally understood.

He already had.

Every day.

Every silence.

Every excuse.

Every time his mother reached for Noah and he looked away.

“You chose,” she said. “You just want me to pretend you didn’t.”

Vivian walked toward her.

“Give me the keys.”

Camila held them tighter.

“No.”

Vivian smiled.

It was the ugliest smile Camila had ever seen.

“Then we’ll call someone and explain that you’re emotional, sleep-deprived, and threatening to disappear with the baby.”

Camila’s body went still.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Mom.”

Vivian did not look at him.

“She needs help.”

Camila’s eyes moved to Daniel.

“Is that what you’re going to say?”

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

That silence was enough.

Camila shifted Noah to one arm and reached into her pocket with her free hand.

Vivian’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?”

Camila pressed one button on her phone.

Then she said clearly, “Blue elephant.”

Daniel’s face went blank.

Vivian did not understand.

Robert laughed.

“What, is that supposed to scare us?”

Camila put the phone back in her pocket.

“No,” she said. “It’s supposed to tell the truth.”

For the first time, Daniel looked afraid.

Vivian reached for the keys.

Camila pulled back.

Robert moved fast for a man his age, grabbing at her dress, trying to stop her from stepping toward the door.

Noah startled and whimpered.

That sound changed Camila’s whole face.

“Do not scare my baby.”

Vivian lunged.

Her hand closed around the key ring.

She yanked.

The keys slipped from Camila’s fingers.

Then Vivian threw them onto the marble floor.

Metal cracked against stone.

“You don’t deserve that car.”

Every relative in the house froze.

Lauren appeared at the top of the stairs, phone in hand, recording.

Camila looked down at the keys.

Then at Vivian.

Her eyes were red.

But she would not give that woman tears.

“I paid for it.”

Robert dropped to one knee, still gripping the fabric of her dress.

“This is our house!”

Camila moved her shoe and pushed the folder forward.

The payment records spilled open beside the keys.

Vehicle title.

Registration.

Insurance.

Receipts.

All in Camila’s name.

Vivian looked down and finally saw what the others saw.

Proof.

Then the front door opened.

General Michael Carter stepped inside.
