Chapter 9 - The Order Signed With My Name

Two security officers entered the hospital room before I finished reading the forged transfer request.
“Mr. Mercer, step away from the patient.”
My mother grabbed my hand.
“He’s my son.”
One officer moved between us.
“We received notice that you attempted to remove Mrs. Mercer against medical advice.”
“I brought her here.”
“The legal file says you removed her from an authorized residential-care environment.”
“My house is not a care facility.”
The officer looked at his tablet.
“It’s registered as one.”
I stared at him.
Clara had done more than establish false residency.
She had temporarily licensed part of our home as a private caregiving location through one of Nathan’s shell companies.
That explained the medication deliveries.
The transport order.
The language she used.
Patient.
Management.
Care plan.
She had converted abuse into paperwork.
“My wife filed these documents without my knowledge.”
“The application includes your signature and a video authorization.”
“Video?”
The officer turned the tablet.
I appeared on screen.
Same face.
Same voice.
Same navy travel jacket.
The recorded version of me said, “I authorize Clara Mercer and Dr. Nathan Cole to make all temporary care decisions for Margaret Mercer while I am abroad.”
I had never made that video.
But the man looked exactly like me.
Clara had access to hundreds of corporate interviews, board presentations, and family recordings.
Someone had built a convincing synthetic version of my face and voice.
The timestamp showed the authorization had been recorded two days after I left for Singapore.
Travel records proved I was out of the country.
But the hospital staff did not know that.
To them, the video looked real.
“Check the metadata,” I said.
“Our legal department is reviewing it.”
“Call Detective Sarah Morgan.”
The officer hesitated.
Sarah was the responding detective assigned after the police found the medications and forged documents.
She arrived fifteen minutes later and watched the video twice.
“This is sophisticated,” she said.
“Can you prove it’s false?”
“Eventually.”
“Eventually isn’t enough. There’s a transfer team on the way.”
Sarah placed an officer outside the room.
“No one moves Margaret until we verify the order.”
My mother squeezed my fingers.
“Clara made me watch videos of you.”
I looked at her.
“What videos?”
“You said I should listen to her.”
“I never said that.”
“I know now.”
Her eyes filled.
“In one video, you said the house was Clara’s and I had to work if I wanted to stay. In another, you said you were ashamed of me.”
I felt sick.
Clara had not only isolated my mother physically.
She had used my face to break her trust in me.
That was why Mom apologized when I found her.
Why she believed I had agreed to the abuse.
“I’m sorry.”
“You didn’t know.”
“I should have.”
Sarah asked Mom to describe where Clara showed the videos.
“In the little room downstairs.”
The staff room.
“There was a tablet attached to the wall.”
I opened the smart-home dashboard remotely.
A device named CARE DISPLAY appeared on the network.
Its usage logs showed dozens of video sessions.
Every clip had been uploaded from an account tied to Vale Medical Holdings.
Clara had created an entire false version of me.
One that approved every cruelty.
One that made my mother believe her son had abandoned her.
The transfer request was suspended while investigators reviewed the digital evidence.
At 7:10 p.m., Sarah received news from Nathan’s clinic.
Officers had found Rosa.
She was alive.
But she denied being held against her will.
She claimed I had paid her to fabricate accusations against Clara.
Sarah showed me the recorded statement.
Rosa’s face was bruised.
Her voice shook.
“I lied because Daniel promised me money.”
“Why would she say that?”
Sarah paused the video.
“Look at the reflection.”
A glass cabinet behind Rosa reflected part of the room.
A woman stood beside the camera.
Red dress.
Loose dark bun.
Clara.
The statement had been recorded less than an hour earlier.
Clara had left our house while the officers were occupied collecting evidence.
The patrol officer assigned to remain with her claimed she went upstairs to change.
She never came back down.
Then my phone received a message from her.
