Chapter 15 - The Father Behind the Fire

Caleb pressed one hand against the reinforced window.
Daniel stood twenty feet behind Lena.
Older.
Thinner.
A burn scar crossed the right side of his neck, but the eyes were unmistakable.
The man Caleb had mourned for twelve years looked back at him without surprise.
Ethan stirred against Caleb’s chest.
Caleb lowered his voice.
“Dad?”
Daniel’s expression broke for the briefest moment.
Then he looked toward Lena.
“Move her to the transport level.”
Two guards seized Lena’s arms.
She held Emma tightly.
Caleb struck the steel barrier.
“Don’t touch her!”
Daniel stepped closer to the window.
“I’m sorry you had to see this.”
“You’re alive.”
“Yes.”
“You let me think you were dead.”
“It kept you safe.”
“Nothing you did kept anyone safe.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Behind Caleb, Cole’s team exchanged gunfire with Rebecca’s guards. Margaret crouched beside the laboratory counter, staring at Daniel through the glass.
Her face showed shock unlike anything Caleb had seen that day.
She had not known.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
He heard her through the intercom.
His eyes moved toward Margaret.
“You were never supposed to come here.”
Margaret rose slowly.
“You started the hospital fire.”
“No.”
“Rebecca said you changed the oxygen pressure.”
“I triggered an alarm test. She turned it into a massacre.”
Rebecca appeared beside him holding the waterproof case.
“You gave me the access sequence,” she said.
“I gave you a monitored sequence.”
“You wanted federal investigators to find the laboratory.”
“I wanted the program exposed.”
Rebecca smiled.
“Yet here you are, protecting it.”
Daniel looked toward the case.
“I am protecting what remains.”
Caleb adjusted Ethan against his shoulder.
“What remains of what?”
Daniel’s gaze settled on the child.
“The only stable second-generation subject.”
Caleb stepped back from the window.
“You are not taking him.”
“I don’t want Ethan.”
Daniel looked toward Emma in Lena’s arms.
“I want her.”
Lena tightened her grip on the baby.
“No.”
Daniel raised one hand.
The guards stopped moving.
He approached Lena slowly.
“Emma’s screening showed the marker.”
“What marker?” Caleb demanded.
Daniel turned toward the window.
“The trait the program spent forty years trying to create.”
Caleb looked down at Ethan, then toward his daughter.
“You tested them?”
Lena’s face showed confusion.
“I never gave permission.”
Rebecca opened the waterproof case.
Inside, C-32 remained intact.
She removed the sample and held it beneath the red emergency lighting.
“The twins were screened at birth,” she said. “As all newborns are.”
Naomi emerged from behind the counter.
“You intercepted their blood cards.”
Rebecca glanced at her.
“Your mother did.”
Naomi looked toward the older woman behind the glass partition.
Her mother shook her head violently.
Rebecca smiled.
“She still believes resistance matters.”
Cole’s voice came through Caleb’s earpiece.
“We found another route. Keep them talking.”
Caleb looked at Daniel.
“You recorded the message in the file.”
“Yes.”
“You told me to protect Lena.”
“I meant it.”
“You kidnapped her.”
“I removed her from a military escort compromised by Rebecca.”
Lena stared at him.
“You told me Cole planned to take the twins.”
Daniel’s expression tightened.
Caleb saw the realization on Lena’s face.
Daniel had manipulated her too.
“None of us knows who to trust,” Daniel said. “That is how Rebecca survived this long.”
Margaret stepped closer to the barrier.
“What happened on the boat?”
Daniel looked at her.
“You happened.”
Her face crumpled.
“I never ordered your death.”
“You told Rebecca I had the records.”
“I was afraid.”
“You were always afraid.”
“I loved you.”
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“You loved control.”
The words struck Margaret into silence.
Rebecca slipped the blood sample into a metal carrier.
“We are leaving.”
Daniel looked at her.
“No.”
She stopped.
For the first time, uncertainty crossed Rebecca’s face.
Daniel reached inside his coat and removed a small remote.
“You thought this facility belonged to you.”
“What did you do?”
“I built a second archive.”
Rebecca’s calm disappeared.
“Where?”
Daniel pressed the remote.
A panel in the wall opened.
Inside sat rows of sealed evidence boxes and refrigerated sample containers.
Cole’s voice sharpened in Caleb’s ear.
“We can see it. Hold position.”
Rebecca stared at the archive.
“You copied everything.”
“Every transfer. Every birth. Every death.”
Margaret moved toward the window.
“Daniel, open the door.”
He ignored her.
Rebecca raised a pistol and pointed it at Lena.
Caleb’s body went rigid.
Daniel raised his own weapon.
The two faced each other across the red-lit laboratory.
“Put it down,” Daniel said.
Rebecca smiled.
“You still think this is about the program.”
“What else would it be?”
“The program ended years ago.”
She pointed the pistol toward Emma.
“This is about who owns the evidence.”
A new voice filled the laboratory speakers.
Victor Hale.
“Actually, Rebecca, that would be me.”
Everyone looked upward.
Victor appeared on a monitor above the archive.
His image was live.
He sat inside an unknown room with the original security drive on the table before him.
Caleb looked toward Margaret.
She stared at the screen in disbelief.
Victor lifted a sealed envelope.
“I sold Daniel a copy,” he said. “I kept the original.”
Rebecca’s face twisted.
“What do you want?”
“Immunity.”
“You won’t get it.”
“I already did.”
Cole’s team reached the opposite side of the security barrier.
Metal cutting equipment screamed against the door.
Victor continued.
“The drive contains Room 814 footage, payment records, and the complete audio from the night of the fire.”
Caleb stepped closer to the monitor.
“Play it.”
Victor looked directly into the camera.
“Not until Caleb answers one question.”
“What question?”
Victor opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was a birth certificate.
He held it close enough for the names to become visible.
Caleb Carter was not listed as Emma and Ethan’s father.
A different name appeared on the document.
Caleb could not read it from where he stood.
Lena saw it.
Her face went white.
Caleb looked at her through the reinforced glass.
“What is that?”
Lena shook her head.
“I can explain.”
Daniel lowered his weapon slightly.
Rebecca smiled.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Caleb’s grip tightened around Ethan.
“Lena, whose name is on that birth certificate?”
Before she answered, the cutting equipment broke through the barrier.
The steel door began to rise.
Daniel turned toward the newly opened passage.
Someone stepped through the smoke behind Cole’s team.
Lena stared at the newcomer and whispered a name Caleb had never heard before.
The man looked at Ethan in Caleb’s arms, then at Emma against Lena’s chest.
His eyes filled with recognition.
May you like
And Caleb understood from the man’s face that the question was no longer whether he had abandoned his children.
It was whether they had ever been his.
