Chapter 1

The enemy laughed from the cliffs because they thought the canyon had already won.

Twelve Navy SEALs were pinned behind broken rocks, trapped in a narrow desert cut filled with smoke, dust, and blood.

Bullets ripped down from both ridgelines.

Stone exploded around them.

A wounded SEAL lay on his back, one hand pressed to his side, teeth clenched so hard his jaw shook.

Their radios were damaged.

Their ammo was almost gone.

And above them, hidden in the rocks, the enemy commander shouted through a captured frequency.

“No one is coming for you!”

The words echoed through the canyon like a death sentence.

Lieutenant Commander Jack Mercer wiped blood and sand from his eyes.

He looked at his men.

Twelve of them had entered the canyon.

Only twelve were still breathing.

But some were barely holding on.

“We’re almost out of ammo!” Petty Officer Nolan Briggs shouted, slamming a fresh magazine into his rifle.

Mercer pressed his hand harder against the wound on his own thigh.

Pain flashed white behind his eyes.

He ignored it.

He grabbed the radio and screamed into it.

“Any aircraft, this is SEAL team Reaper Six. We need fire support now!”

Static answered.

Then more gunfire.

A round cracked against the rock inches from his face.

One of his men looked up, listening.

Far away, beneath the thunder of bullets, there was something else.

A low sound.

Heavy.

Growing.

The wounded SEAL turned his head.
