Chapter 1 - All Forty-One Are Gone

“You’re living too large.”

Mason Caldwell’s palm slammed against the white dining table so hard the champagne glasses trembled.

Evelyn Caldwell did not move.

She sat at the center of the table in a white tailored suit, silver hair styled neatly, spine straight, hands resting beside a plate she had barely touched.

Around her, the family dinner froze.

Her son stood over her in a blue suit, face red, finger pointed inches from her eyes like she was a child being scolded.

Brianna, Mason’s wife, stood to his right in a pale dress with a polished little smile. Her parents sat behind her, pretending to be shocked while clearly enjoying every second.

Mason leaned closer.

“You have a driver, two houses, a private chef, three club memberships, and you still act like helping your own son is some kind of charity.”

Evelyn slowly placed her fork and knife on the plate.

One soft click.

That was all.

Mason’s mouth twisted.

“Don’t do that.”

Evelyn looked up.

“Do what?”

“That calm little queen act. It’s embarrassing.”

A few relatives lowered their eyes.

No one defended her.

Not one.

Brianna placed one hand on the table and gave Evelyn a gentle smile that was more poisonous than Mason’s shouting.

“Family should come first.”

Evelyn’s eyes flickered.

Pain moved through them.

Then vanished.

She looked down at the phone beside her wineglass. The screen lit up with a financial dashboard. No one at the table could read the details, but Mason recognized enough to stop talking.

Evelyn unlocked it with her thumb.

Mason’s confidence faltered.

“Mom.”

She tapped once.

Then looked directly at him.

“Then I’ll start with family.”

Nine minutes later, they were no longer in the dining room.

They were in Evelyn’s private office on the top floor, surrounded by glass walls overlooking the city. Thick folders were stacked across the conference table.

Her financial manager, Thomas Reed, stood beside her with a tablet.

Mason sat with his face in both hands.

Brianna stood behind him, white as chalk.

Her parents no longer smiled.

Evelyn placed her phone on the table.

“Cancel every payment.”

Thomas looked at her once.

She nodded.

He tapped the tablet.

Mason’s head snapped up.

“Wait.”

Thomas tapped again.

Brianna covered her mouth.

Her father stared at the folders like he had just seen a body.

Evelyn sat perfectly still, hands folded beneath her chin.

Thomas checked the final screen.

“All forty-one are gone.”

Mason’s face drained.

“What did you do?”

Evelyn slid one folder across the table toward him.

“I gave you exactly what you demanded.”

His hands shook as he opened it.

The first line made him stop breathing.

Brianna whispered, “Mason?”

Evelyn’s voice stayed calm.

May you like

“You wanted family first. So tonight, I started with the family members who have been stealing from me.”

👉 Mason thought his mother would be too hurt to fight back, but the first folder proved she had been tracking every dollar for months.
