Chapter 8 - The Groom Who Chose Too Late

Evan tried to reach Lily again.

“Lily, listen to me.”

She stepped back.

Not far.

Just enough.

His hand stopped in the air.

That tiny movement seemed to break him more than the documents.

“I didn’t know she would take it this far,” he said.

Lily looked at the torn fabric at her chest.

“You tore my dress.”

“I panicked.”

“You ripped off my necklace.”

“I thought you were sending something.”

“I was.”

His face twisted.

“Because you never trusted me.”

Lily stared at him.

The ballroom seemed to vanish around them.

For a second, it was only the two of them.

The woman on the floor.

The man standing above her.

The love story collapsing under the weight of what he had become.

“I trusted you enough to tell you everything,” Lily said. “You trusted your mother enough to turn it into strategy.”

Evan’s eyes filled.

That was the first genuine thing he had shown since the ceremony.

But genuine pain did not erase what his hands had done.

Victoria hissed, “Evan, stop apologizing.”

He turned toward her.

Something in his face cracked.

“No.”

The room froze.

Victoria stared at him.

“What did you say?”

Evan looked suddenly young.

Terrified.

Too late.

“I said no.”

Lily’s heart did not soften.

Not the way he wanted.

Because no spoken after the damage was not protection.

It was regret.

Evan faced Rebecca.

“I’ll testify.”

Victoria’s face went white.

“Evan.”

He ignored her.

“I’ll give you access to the Carter attorney messages. The family trust records. The old settlement with Julian’s ex-wife. All of it.”

Rebecca studied him carefully.

“That does not undo assault.”

“I know.”

“Or coercion.”

“I know.”

“Or conspiracy.”

His voice broke.

“I know.”

Victoria’s hand flew to her chest.

“My own son?”

Evan looked at her.

“You told me if I didn’t control my wife, I’d end up like Julian.”

Lily flinched at the phrase.

My wife.

Even now.

Rebecca corrected him calmly.

“Lily is not your wife in any practical sense until she decides how to proceed.”

Evan swallowed.

The pastor, who had been standing near the altar entrance to the ballroom, stepped forward.

“The marriage certificate has not yet been filed.”

Every head turned.

Lily looked at him.

The pastor’s voice was gentle.

“After the ceremony, Mrs. Carter requested the certificate be held until the reception trust ritual was completed. I found the request unusual, so I had not filed it.”

Victoria looked furious.

Lily looked at Rebecca.

Rebecca’s eyes narrowed.

“Victoria requested that?”

The pastor nodded.

“Yes.”

Rebecca turned slowly toward Victoria.

“So you delayed the filing of the marriage certificate until after the asset ceremony.”

The room understood at once.

Victoria did not want Lily married first.

She wanted the transfer first.

Then the legal trap.

Lily let out a breath she did not know she was holding.

Evan whispered, “Lily…”

She looked at him.

May you like

“There is no marriage for you to save.”

👉 Evan finally turned against Victoria, but it was too late to save the marriage certificate his mother had delayed for the trust transfer.
