Chapter 3 - Tonight?

Robert Hale answered on the second ring.
He was seventy-one, blunt, and had been Eleanor’s attorney since Thomas was alive.
“Eleanor?”
She stood under the valet lights, evening air cold against her face.
Behind the glass doors, she could still see the golden dining room.
Vanessa laughing nervously.
Daniel checking his phone.
Guests pretending not to stare.
Robert’s voice sharpened.
“What happened?”
Eleanor looked at the small leather folder in her hand.
“She told me to eat in the bathroom.”
Silence.
Then Robert said, “In front of the guests?”
“Yes.”
“And Daniel?”
“He looked at his phone.”
The line went quiet again.
This time, not from surprise.
From anger.
Robert asked one word.
“Tonight?”
Eleanor closed her eyes.
For a second, she saw Daniel as a little boy asleep with a toy truck under his arm.
Then she saw the man who had heard his wife humiliate his mother and chose a screen.
“Yes,” Eleanor said. “Tonight.”
Robert exhaled.
“Then I’ll begin.”
Inside his dark office across town, Robert opened the file labeled BENNETT — FAMILY SUPPORT TERMINATION.
He had prepared it because Eleanor asked him to.
He had hoped she would never need it.
First, he notified the restaurant that Eleanor Bennett would not be covering any additional private event balance beyond the nonrefundable deposit already paid.
The final bill would go to the event hosts.
Daniel and Vanessa Bennett.
Second, he canceled the monthly transfer to Daniel’s personal account.
Third, he froze the business line of credit Eleanor had guaranteed.
Fourth, he revoked authorization for Vanessa’s interior designer, stylist, event planner, and “brand consultant” invoices.
Fifth, he notified the townhouse lender that Eleanor would no longer cover Daniel’s mortgage shortfalls.
Sixth, he activated the clause Thomas Bennett had insisted on before his death.
If Daniel Bennett or any spouse attempts to pressure, exploit, publicly degrade, or financially manipulate Eleanor Bennett, all discretionary family support is suspended pending review.
Thomas had written that clause himself.
Eleanor had cried when he did.
“Daniel would never do that,” she told him.
Thomas had kissed her forehead.
“I hope you’re right. I’m still protecting you if you’re wrong.”
Tonight, Thomas was right.
Eleanor hated that.
Robert sent the first notices.
Then he looked at the final document.
This one hurt most.
Removal of Daniel Bennett from the future control track of the Bennett Family Foundation.
Robert hesitated.
Then remembered Eleanor’s voice.
Go eat in the bathroom.
He signed.
Back at the restaurant, Daniel’s phone lit up again and again.
Bank alert.
Foundation notice.
Loan guarantee revoked.
Payment authorization canceled.
Event balance due.
Vanessa opened the black check folder.
The remaining balance for the private room, wine service, band, orchids, valet, and custom menu was larger than her first car.
Her mouth fell open.
Daniel stared toward the entrance.
