Chapter 5 - This Check Is Evidence

Thomas Reed took the check with both hands.

He had known Claire since she was a child, though she had not realized how much he knew about her situation.

His office had glass walls, gray chairs, and a view of the bank lobby where people moved quietly between teller stations.

Claire sat across from him in her navy dress, cheek still red from the slap.

Walter stood behind her.

Her phone lay on the desk, recording paused but saved.

Thomas examined the check.

Then the account.

Then the restrictions Walter had placed on it.

His face changed.

“This check is evidence.”

Claire swallowed.

“Evidence of what?”

Thomas looked at Walter.

Walter nodded once, giving permission.

Thomas turned the monitor slightly.

“Claire, this check came from the protected fund your grandfather created for you.”

Claire frowned.

“My education fund?”

“Yes.”

“I thought most of it was gone because I used it.”

Thomas’s expression softened.

“You didn’t use it.”

Her fingers went cold.

“What?”

Thomas opened a file.

“There were withdrawals and transfers made under your name. We believe the authorizations were forged.”

Claire looked at Walter.

He looked older suddenly.

“I found out recently,” he said. “I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

Claire’s throat tightened.

“How much?”

Thomas did not answer immediately.

That was answer enough.

Claire looked down at her hands.

Hands that had worked double shifts.

Hands that had fixed her own car window with tape.

Hands that had signed student loan forms because she believed there was no money left.

“They stole from me?”

Walter’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

Thomas slid another document across the desk.

“Some transfers went into an LLC connected to Mason. Some were routed through accounts connected to your parents.”

Claire leaned back.

The room spun slightly.

“My parents?”

Walter closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Before Claire could speak, the bank’s front doors opened.

Two police officers entered.

Thomas stood.

“I called them when Mr. Whitman notified me he was on the way.”

Claire turned toward the glass wall.

Through the lobby doors, Mason appeared outside with David and Marlene.

Mason slapped his palm against the glass.

His face was no longer angry.

It was desperate.

Walter stepped outside the office and pointed straight at him.

“That is the man who assaulted my granddaughter.”

Mason looked around quickly, realizing customers and officers were watching.

His confidence drained.

Claire stayed seated.

For the first time in her life, she did not rush to explain herself.

She did not try to calm everyone down.

She did not apologize for being the reason the room was uncomfortable.

An officer entered Thomas’s office.

“Miss Whitman?”

Claire nodded.

He glanced at her cheek.

“Do you want to make a statement?”

Claire looked at the check.

Then at the saved recording on her phone.

Then at her grandfather.

“Yes,” she said. “I do.”

Outside the glass, Mason shouted something no one could hear.

David tried to pull him back.

Marlene covered her face.

Thomas placed the check into a protective sleeve.

“We also need to preserve the check itself. If Mason attempted to take it from you by force, that connects the assault to the financial fraud.”

Claire stared at the sleeve.

A birthday check.

A trap.

A lifeline.

Evidence.

👉 Claire gave her statement at the bank, but Mason’s panic made him make one last move that exposed the whole family.
