PART 1: The Kiss That Stopped the Funeral

PART 1: The Kiss That Stopped the Funeral

Daniel Carter kissed his pregnant wife goodbye in front of a silent funeral home.

His hands gripped the polished wooden edge of the open coffin so hard his knuckles turned white.

Elena lay motionless beneath him in a black lace dress, her dark hair brushed smooth around her pale face. A bouquet of white flowers rested across her pregnant belly.

Daniel could barely breathe.

The room behind him was full of mourners dressed in black.

His mother was crying into a handkerchief.

His friends stood frozen near the aisle.

And Victor Hale, Elena’s powerful father, watched from the right side of the coffin with a face that looked less broken than impatient.

Daniel leaned down.

His lips touched Elena’s.

A final kiss.

A goodbye he never should have had to give.

Then the flowers moved.

Not slipped.

Not shifted from his breath.

Moved.

One sharp rise beneath the black lace.

Daniel jerked backward, his face going white.

“Elena…?”

The room froze.

A woman behind him stopped crying and covered her mouth.

An old man near the front lifted his head fast.

The bouquet trembled again.

Daniel pointed at Elena’s belly, his voice cracking.

“Did you see that?”

Someone screamed, “Call the doctors—now!”

Victor moved first.

He rushed to the coffin and slammed one hand onto the wooden edge, blocking people’s view.

“Daniel, stop this nonsense.”

Daniel stepped in front of him.

“No.”

Victor’s eyes flashed.

“She’s gone.”

Daniel looked down at Elena’s face.

Her lips were pale.

Her skin was cold.

But beneath the flowers, her stomach shifted again.

The baby.

Their baby.

Daniel shoved the bouquet aside with shaking hands.

“Elena,” he whispered. “Baby, can you hear me?”

From the back of the funeral home, emergency workers ran in with a doctor behind them. Chairs scraped. Mourners backed away. Someone knocked over a flower stand.

One paramedic checked Elena’s neck.

Another lifted an oxygen mask.

The doctor leaned in, then shouted, “I have a faint pulse!”

Daniel almost collapsed.

Victor stepped back.

For the first time that day, the color drained from his face.

Elena’s chest gave a tiny, painful jerk, like her body was trying to remember how to breathe.

Daniel bent over her, tears falling onto the black lace.

“Stay with me,” he begged. “Please, stay with me.”

Then Elena’s eyelids trembled.

Slowly, impossibly, her eyes opened.

They found Daniel first.

Her lips moved.

No sound came.

Daniel leaned closer.

“Elena?”

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Broken.

Terrified.

“They tried to kill us.”

The funeral home erupted.

But Daniel did not look away from his wife.

Because behind him, Victor Hale had stopped pretending to grieve.
