PART 6: The Lie at the Door

PART 6: The Lie at the Door

Daniel opened the door with both hands raised.

He looked terrified.

But not sorry.

“Thank God you’re here,” he said to the officers. “My wife fell. She’s been unstable for weeks.”

Emily lay on the floor behind him, shaking.

Her lips moved, but no sound came out.

Charles stepped forward.

Daniel blocked him.

“Sir, please,” Daniel said, turning to the officers. “She’s been paranoid. She’s pregnant and confused. She attacked me earlier. I was trying to stop her from hurting herself.”

Vanessa found her voice.

“Yes,” she said quickly. “I saw it. Emily was screaming. Daniel tried to calm her down.”

One officer moved past Daniel toward Emily.

The other looked at Charles.

“Sir, are you the reporting party?”

Charles did not take his eyes off Daniel.

“Yes.”

Daniel forced out a laugh.

“He’s biased. He hates me.”

Charles slowly lifted his phone.

“Then you’ll be relieved to know the cameras aren’t biased.”

Daniel’s face twitched.

Charles pressed play.

The hallway filled with Daniel’s own voice.

“You should’ve stayed quiet.”

Then the video showed the kick.

The officer beside Daniel reached for his cuffs immediately.

Daniel stepped back.

“No. No, that’s not—she edited that.”

Charles swiped to another clip.

Vanessa in the nursery.

“She knows. She opened the safe.”

Another clip.

Daniel grabbing Emily’s wrist.

Another.

Vanessa telling him to grab the phone before Emily talked.

The living room went silent except for Emily’s ragged breathing.

Then the paramedics rushed in.

Charles dropped to his knees beside his daughter.

“Emily,” he whispered. “Honey, look at me.”

Her eyes found his.

For a moment, she looked like the little girl who used to run into his arms after nightmares.

“Dad,” she breathed. “The baby.”

“I know.” His voice broke. “Help is here.”

A paramedic placed an oxygen mask over Emily’s face.

Another checked her pulse.

“We need to move now,” one said. “Possible placental trauma. She’s contracting.”

Emily’s eyes widened in panic.

“No,” she whispered through the mask. “No, no…”

Charles held her hand.

“You stay with me,” he said. “You hear me? You stay with me.”

Behind him, Daniel struggled as the officer cuffed him.

“This is insane!” Daniel shouted. “She’s my wife!”

Charles turned.

For the first time that night, Daniel saw what Charles had been holding back.

Not anger.

Something colder.

“You lost the right to call her that when you put your foot on her body.”

Vanessa tried to slip toward the hallway.

A folder fell from her bag.

The second officer picked it up.

Inside were forged property documents, Emily’s passport, Daniel’s passport, and a boarding pass for a flight leaving the next morning.

The officer looked at Vanessa.

“Ma’am, don’t move.”

Her mouth opened.

No lie came fast enough.

As Emily was lifted onto the stretcher, her fingers tightened around Charles’s hand.

“Dad,” she whispered. “There’s more.”

Charles bent close.

“What, baby?”

Emily swallowed through the pain.

“The safe… insurance… signatures…”

Then her eyes rolled back.

The heart monitor screamed.

👉 Charles followed the stretcher into the night, not knowing whether he was about to lose his daughter, his grandson, or both.
