Chapter 10 - Damian’s Apology

Damian came to Clara’s house three weeks later.
Not with Teresa.
Not with Valerie.
With Nathan.
Valerie refused to come.
Nathan stood on the porch holding Damian’s hand and looking like a man who had finally seen the room he had been living in.
Clara almost did not open the door.
Then she saw Damian crying.
Not fake crying.
Not angry crying.
The confused kind children cry when adults make them part of something they do not fully understand.
Clara opened the door halfway.
“Nathan.”
He nodded.
“We won’t come in unless you say it’s okay.”
Good.
At least someone was learning.
Mateo peeked from behind Clara’s leg.
Damian looked at him and immediately looked down.
“I’m sorry,” Damian whispered.
Mateo gripped Clara’s dress.
Clara looked at Nathan.
Nathan said quietly, “He asked to say it. I told him he could only come if Mateo didn’t have to answer.”
Clara looked back at Mateo.
“Do you want to hear him?”
Mateo nodded a little.
Damian held out both hands.
No toy.
No demand.
“I’m sorry I kept asking for your car. Grandma said you had too much and I didn’t. Mom said you should share because your dad was gone and people felt bad for you.”
Nathan closed his eyes.
Clara’s jaw tightened.
Damian continued.
“I laughed when Grandma hit you because… because I thought if I didn’t laugh, Mom would get mad at me.”
Mateo stared.
Damian started crying harder.
“I don’t want your car anymore.”
Mateo looked down at the red car in his own hand.
Then back at Damian.
“You can’t have it.”
Damian nodded quickly.
“I know.”
Mateo thought for a long time.
Then said, “You can look at it from there.”
Damian gave a tiny nod.
Clara nearly cried.
That was not forgiveness.
That was a boundary spoken by a child who had finally been told no was allowed.
Nathan placed a folder on the porch table.
“These are copies of every text Valerie sent me about the guardianship petition and the account. Nina already has the originals. I’m cooperating.”
Clara looked at him.
“Why now?”
Nathan’s eyes filled.
“Because I watched a child get slapped and said nothing. I don’t want Damian learning that silence is how men behave.”
Clara studied him.
“You’re leaving Valerie?”
He looked toward the driveway.
“We’re separated. She says I betrayed the family.”
Clara almost laughed.
Family.
That word again.
Nathan knelt beside Damian.
“Ready?”
Damian nodded.
Before leaving, he looked at Mateo.
“Bye.”
Mateo did not answer.
That was okay.
After they left, Mateo climbed onto the couch beside Clara.
“Did I have to forgive him?”
“No.”
“Did I do bad?”
“No.”
“I let him look.”
“That was kind.”
Mateo leaned against her.
“But the car stays mine.”
Clara kissed his hair.
“Yes, baby. The car stays yours.”
That night, Clara placed Rafael’s video USB in a small safe with the blue folder.
Then she took out the red car and cleaned its wheels.
Mateo watched her.
“Mommy?”
“Yes?”
“Daddy knew Grandma was mean?”
Clara paused.
“He knew some people need strong rules around them.”
Mateo thought about that.
“Like no hitting?”
“Exactly.”
“And no taking?”
“Yes.”
“And no saying family means I have to say yes?”
Clara’s throat tightened.
May you like
“Yes, Mateo. Especially that.”
👉 Damian’s apology gave Mateo a small piece of peace, but Teresa and Valerie still refused to admit the real reason they wanted control.
