Chapter 1 - The Turkey Through The Glass

The sauce hit Eleanor Sterling’s face in front of the entire dining room.

For one frozen second, nobody moved.

The long table was set with white flowers, red wine, silver chargers, and crystal glasses bright beneath the chandelier. Sunlight poured through the tall glass doors behind the dining room, making everything look clean and expensive.

Except Eleanor.

She stood beside the table in a cream suit, blonde hair neatly pinned, cranberry glaze running down one cheek.

Across from her, Cynthia Sterling lowered the spoon she had just used, her lavender dress perfect, her mouth twisted with disgust.

“You’re disgusting.”

Samuel, Eleanor’s only son, stood behind Cynthia in a dark suit.

He did nothing.

Not a word.

Not a step.

Not even a hand raised to stop his wife.

Something inside Eleanor went still.

For three years, she had swallowed Cynthia’s insults.

The jokes about her “old taste.”

The comments about her “helping around the house.”

The way Cynthia introduced her as “Samuel’s mother, when she’s useful.”

But this was different.

Cynthia had done this before dinner because she believed the guests arriving in five minutes would only see an old woman cleaning up a mess.

Eleanor took one breath.

Then she lifted the massive silver turkey tray with both hands.

Samuel’s eyes widened.

“Mom—”

Too late.

Eleanor hurled the tray straight through the tall glass door.

The turkey flew with it.

Glass exploded outward across the patio.

The chandelier trembled.

Cynthia screamed.

Samuel stumbled backward.

Eleanor stood amid glittering shards, breathing hard, sauce still on her face.

Then she picked up a white napkin and slowly wiped her cheek.

“No,” she said. “I’m done being quiet.”

Cynthia stared at her like she had never seen her before.

Maybe she had not.

Eleanor set the empty tray on the edge of the table and touched the thin leather folder beside the silver knives.

Sterling Peak Holdings.

Samuel saw the company seal and went pale.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

“Mom… what is that?”

Eleanor’s phone lit on the table.

Front door camera.

The Coles have arrived.

In the foyer, Patterson Cole stood outside with his wife and a gray-suited investment adviser, all of them hearing the echo of broken glass from inside the house.

Patterson frowned.

“Open the door.”

Eleanor picked up the folder and turned toward the hallway.

The sauce was still visible on her face.

Cynthia looked from the shattered glass to the folder and finally understood that the people she had been desperate to impress were about to see the truth.

Eleanor smiled without warmth.

“Let’s show them what this family really is.”
